Chad Burrow, clarinet

Clarinetist Chad Burrow has performed to critical acclaim from Europe, to the Americas and Asia. His performances have been described by critics as "beyond reproach," and ...[played] with a full, liquid tone." Rick Rogers of the Daily Oklahoman stated that a recent performance was "...always governed by an overriding musicality." The Thistead Dagbald described a recent performance of Kachaturian and Bartok as played with a, "brilliant technique and tonal beauty mixed with an expressive ferocity." Another performance described Burrow’s playing as, "...in a class of his own, with a sublime sound, striking interpretation, and unbelievable intensity of rhythm and nerve."

Burrow is associate professor of clarinet at Oklahoma City University, faculty member of the AlpenKammermusik Festival (Liesing, Austria) and the principal clarinetist with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra, Quartz Mountain Music Festival Orchestra, and the Camerata Pangae. Burrow is also the artistic director of the BrightMusic Chamber Ensemble and member of Duo Clarion along with his wife, pianist Amy Cheng. The Ensemble performs several concerts in and around Oklahoma City each year (www.okcbrightmusic.com). He is the past principal clarinetist with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra.

Burrow has been honored at solo and chamber music competitions around the country including top prizes in the 2001 Young Concert Artist Auditions in New York, 2000 Woolsey Hall Competition, 2000 Artist International Competition, and 1997 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. He has appeared as a soloist with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra, Taichung Philharmonic Orchestra, Tulsa Philharmonic Orchestra, Shin Sharn Chamber Ensemble, Ft. Smith Symphony Orchestra, Lawton Philharmonic Orchestra, Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra, Yale Philharmonia Orchestra, UCO Chamber Orchestra, Oklahoma City University Wind Philharmonic, Oklahoma Youth Orchestra, Oklahoma Youth Symphony and the Tulsa Youth Symphony Orchestra. His repertoire includes all of the standard concerti from Mozart to Copland and Spohr to Hartmann as well as more recent compositions.

Burrow has presented recent recitals in Boston, Chicago, Oklahoma City, Tulsa (OK), New York, New Haven (CT), Providence (RI), Rochester (NY), Salt Lake City, South Bend (IN), and San Francisco. Some recent international recitals have included chamber music concerts across Northern Germany, and across Denmark with the Thy Masterclass Chamber Music Festival and almost yearly tours of Taiwan, beginning in 2001. The performances in Taiwan have included venues in Taichung and the national concert hall in Taipei. Burrow has played concert stages ranging from Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, Chicago's Symphony Center, the Music Mansion in Providence (RI), the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, and the Schleswigg-Holstein Musik Festival in Germany. Burrow has also been invited to give masterclasses and lectures in a number of schools including the San Francisco School of the Arts, Louisiana State University, SUNY Potsdam, University of Western Ontario, Northwestern College (IA), Taichung Teachers University, and the Taipei University of the Arts and others.

Burrow frequently collaborates with his wife, pianist Amy I-Lin Cheng. The duo (Duo Clarion) has appeared in the 8th, 9th and 10th Amadeus Piano Festivals in Tulsa, in Munich, Germany, Taiwan, 2007 University of Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium, 2007 International Clarinet Association Conference (Vancouver, Canada), the 2004 Society of Composers, Inc. National Conference and given duo recitals across the US. Other recent concerts have included the Central Oklahoma Teachers Association Annual Recital, the Chopin Society of Mid America Concert Series, the Civic Music Association of Oklahoma City Concert Series, the Stonington Opera House Summer Concert Series(ME), Chamber Music in the Pines Summer Series, and in recital at Northwestern College (IA), Stephen F. Austin State University (TX), University of Utah, University of Maine in Orno and Taipei University of the Arts. The duo made its debut CD recording appearance on "Chamber Music of Edward Knight" on Albany Records, released in 2005. Duo Clarion appears by arrangement with Performance Management International.

Other recent performances have included performances with pianists Tanya Bannister, Daniel Blumenthal, and Peter Miyamoto, as well as cellists Sophie Shao and Morton Zeuten, flutist Christina Jennings, violists Antoine Tamestit, Paul Neubauer and Matthew Dane and the Van Dingstee String Quartet.

Burrow holds a Bachelor of Music from Northwestern University (Evanston, IL), where he studied with Russell Dagon, and a Master of Music degree from Yale University, where he studied with David Shifrin. Burrow is an artist for Buffet Crampon USA.
